Joanne Benjamin

Our “land line” cell phone rang this morning. It was a lady asking for Joanne Benjamin’s mom. I told her I had never heard of that person…that she must have the wrong number. She apologized and hung up.
Then my cell phone – the one with a Lincoln number – rang. A nice lady asking for Joey and Benjamin’s mom. Oh, that’s me. It was the dentist office calling to remind me of their appointment this Wednesday.
Then she asked me if our land line number had changed. [By this point I had put two and two together.] I told her that it sounded like she was asking for Joanne Benjamin’s mother, and I truthfully did not know anyone by that name. We both laughed, and she hung up.
…and this is only a small sample of how things have been going around here.
Someone called Saturday and asked for “Nicholas Sanderson, please”. I said “Nicholas?” and he said “Yes ma’am, Nicholas Sanderson”.
I said “He’s 4. Are you sure that’s who you’re looking for?” And the man said “Yes, ma’am. We’re calling about his subscription to Ranger Rick magazine. Is he available?”
Are you kidding me?!
I told the fellow that Nick was sleeping and I’d ask him about his subscription when he woke up. It was total sarcasm on my part, but the fellow said “Thank you, ma’am” and hung up.
Sheesh.
The thing is, we refer to them as Ben and Joey. Not Joey and Ben. Not Joseph and Benjamin. Definitely not Joey and Benjamin. I mean, really.
It almost makes me wonder…was she afraid of trying to pronounce my name? Truth be told, there are a lot of ways people pronounce my name, and I answer to practically all of them. I’m thinking she might have had better luck if she would have tried that.
