The Happy Gardener

Remember the little garden that I planted?
This is what the one and only surviving bell pepper plant looked like at the end of June.
Here is the lonely eggplant, after the one and only weeding my garden got this year.
That, my friends, is what those little plants looked like all summer. July. August. Not a change. They just sat there. So, what did I, the devoted gardener, do? I ignored them. Yes, ignored them. I didn’t water it, weed it, or anything.
Occasionally I would go out there and eat cherry tomatoes – the only kind of tomatoes (both planted and volunteer) that grew in my garden this year. But that was all. Because nothing else was doing anything. The eggplant and pepper we alive, but they remained unchanged every time I checked them.
Much to my surprise, once the weather started to cool down, things actually started growing. In fact, the little eggplant grew up into this:
And hiding behind it, the little bell pepper plant grew up into this:
Not only did they grow up (in spite of not being watered or weeded or talked to all summer long), they actually put on produce. I went out to pick some the other day, and this is what I found.
The green pepper lying there – it’s normal sized. Those eggplants are huge! In fact, the plant is so big they were completely hidden. I had seen smaller ones growing, and when I went out to pick them, they weren’t quite ready to pick yet…but I did pick the big ones hiding down below.
Moral of the story: never, never, never give up!
P.S. Do you think I should plant a garden again next year?
I would plant a garden in a heartbeat if I had the space. The gardens I had when I lived with my parents were nearly an acre in size and real showplaces, not to mention the produce I got out of them! I always vote for planting the garden!
Those are some really, really nice eggplant.
I don’t know what is different about the photos you posted on this blog, but we never could see all of the bottom photos. Maybe it is us here, don’t know. If I did a garden again in your shoes, it would be with purchased plants and on a fairly small scale until I found the size I could manage to take care of and harvest.
