Bucket Hat

Last summer I bought the Bucket Hat pattern from Little Turtle Knits and knit myself a hat using Peaches & Cream yarn. Well, there was a small problem when I finished: the hat was too big. Theresa had sized the pattern for cotton yarn that would shrink. Peaches & Cream yarn is pre-shrunk. This was the result:
Yesterday we went up to Schon and Shannon’s (Steve’s brother and his wife) for a Memorial Day BBQ. I took along some knitting so I wouldn’t have to worry about whether or not I was having a good time (I did have fun, for the record). I had unraveled the original Bucket Hat and wound it into a ball. I started re-knitting the yarn on the way up (Steve drove). I didn’t think I would finish the hat because I was expecting us to leave sooner (should’ve known better…) and thus I didn’t bring my double-pointed needles. Needless to say, I did get that far and had to bring the project home almost finished.
I let Ben play outside while I finished it after lunch today and here is my hat:
As you can see, it is doing a very good job of shading my face so you can’t necessarily tell that I’m not wearing any makeup today. You can also see my garden and our yard shed (that Steve painted barn red the weekend before Ben was born) in the background.
And to my sister, who I am sure would tell me again that it is only because I live in the Midwest that I would wear such a thing…this hat is for wearing when I’m gardening. It keeps the sun off my face and out of my eyes. I wear it when I have on clunkly clothes and no makeup. I do not wear it when I leave the house. So be not alarmed!
Originally I had wanted to make a hat like this for Ben. It looks like a boating hat to me – all it needs is an anchor embroidered on the front. Needless to say, Steve put a stop to that idea. Theresa told me she originally designed the pattern for her boys, though, so you never know…
Oh, no way I’m leaving this one alone! I’m the bane of your fashion existence! 😛 Do I really occupy that much concern in your head? I’m starting to hate myself. 🙁
But for the record, the hat is just fine for wearing “with clunky clothes and no makeup” working in the garden. I have often needed just such a thing. Although I fear I would be hotter with one on. You’ll have to tell me how well it accomplished its purpose.
